Membership Levels

The Society of Academic Associations of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine (SAAAPM) is the umbrella organization for the four associations listed below. The umbrella organization SAAAPM does not have individuals as members, but associations as its members. Decisions will be made by input from the four associations as represented in the governing council. The four associations are:

(1) The Association of Academic Anesthesia Chairs (AAAC) representing the Chairs of the academic departments in this country.
(2) The Association of Anesthesiology Core Program Directors (AACPD) which is representative of ACGME designated core program directors.
(3) The Association of Anesthesiology Subspecialty Program Directors (AASPD) representative of the currently recognized subspecialty program directors.
(4) The Association of Anesthesiology Program Administrators and Educators (AAPAE) representing program administrators and educators of ACGME approved anesthesiology residency or fellowship programs.

All members who are anesthesiologists, also shall be active members in good standing of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and shall continuously meet the requirements of membership in ASA as set forth in the ASA Bylaws.

AAAC Membership

AAAC membership shall ordinarily be limited to a physician who is a certified specialist in anesthesiology. This physician must be either the administrative head of a Department or Division of Anesthesiology in an LCME-approved or provisionally approved Medical School in the United States or the Chair of a department that has an ACGME approved core residency program in anesthesiology.

AACPD Membership

AACPD membership shall ordinarily be limited to physician anesthesiologists who are the designated core program directors of anesthesiology residency programs in the United States that have been approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

AACPD Associate Level Membership

One may become an Associate Member of AACPD if he/she is a physician anesthesiologist with significant roles in anesthesiology education and is otherwise ineligible for membership within SAAAPM. This membership requires nomination for membership by the department Chair, who is an Active Member of the AAAC. Education roles that apply include:

  • Vice Chair of Education
  • Program Director of non-ACGME approved anesthesia fellowship
  • Associate Program Director of ACGME approved or non-ACGME approved anesthesia residency
  • Designated Institutional Official
  • Assistant or Associate Dean related to education

AASPD Membership

AASPD membership shall ordinarily be limited to physician anesthesiologists who are subspecialty program directors of anesthesiology related fellowship programs in the United States that have been approved by the ACGME.

ACGME Approved Subspecialty Programs:

  • Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology
  • Critical Care Medicine
  • Obstetric Anesthesia
  • Pain Medicine
  • Pediatric Anesthesiology
  • Pediatric Cardiac
  • Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine

AASPD Associate Membership

One may become an Associate Member of AASPD if he/she is a physician anesthesiologist with significant roles in anesthesiology education and is otherwise ineligible for membership within SAAAPM. AAPAE Membership

AAPAE membership shall ordinarily be limited to program administrators or educators of ACGME approved anesthesiology residency or fellowship programs. Program administrators include individuals directly associated with the administrative management and/or coordination of training programs, and educators include individuals with teaching, curriculum development and/or educational scholarship responsibilities.
