AAPAE

Colleagues,

Welcome to the Association of Anesthesiology Program Administrators and Educators (AAPAE). I’m truly grateful to be stepping into this role, and I’m even more grateful for each of you. Our association has always been strongest when we learn from one another, share openly, and approach our work with curiosity and collaboration. My hope is that this space continues to feel like a true community—one where we’re comfortable asking questions, offering insight, and supporting each other through both challenges and successes.

A Brief History of AAPAE

For many years, anesthesiology administrators and educators recognized the need for a dedicated community of practice—one that reflects the unique nature of our roles and the collective expertise across our programs. In April 2015, the SAAAPM Council supported the formation of AAPAE for a three-year trial period, and by January 2018, every goal set for that pilot phase had been met. AAPAE officially became a full-member association of SAAAPM in April 2018.

We remain deeply grateful for the support of the SAAAPM Council and for the passion and persistence of the administrators and educators whose vision shaped this community. Together, we continue to advance our shared mission: supporting those who train the next generation of anesthesiologists.

What We’re Working On

AAPAE has grown because of the commitment and creativity of its members. Some highlights from recent and ongoing initiatives include:

Mentorship, Advising, and Coaching Program

Designed for program administrators, managers, and educators at every stage of their careers, this three-pronged program helps members find the specific type of support they need—whether it’s quick, situational guidance or a long-term mentoring relationship. Members can explore the program through the Mentorship Program Page on our website.

Our Virtual Community

Our Community Forum, Facebook group, and listserv allow us to connect far beyond the Annual Meeting. These spaces offer opportunities to ask questions, exchange ideas, and find peers who truly understand the nuances of our work. To join the Facebook group, search for “Association of Anesthesiology Program Administrators/Educators (AAPAE)” and answer one brief question. New members are also added to the listserv.

SNAP TALK Sessions

Launched at the Annual Meeting, SNAP TALKs offer members a supportive platform to share projects, highlight innovations, practice public speaking, and strengthen their CVs. Each talk is about 10 minutes, with flexibility in format—PowerPoint, TED-style, or even a creative stand-up-style presentation.

Monthly Professional Development Series

Held on the fourth Thursday of each month, this series supports both new and experienced administrators and educators through continued learning, networking, and community-building. It’s also a space where members can share practical tools, ideas, and lessons learned.

Annual Meeting Planning

The SAAAPM/AAPAE Annual Meeting continues to be an important opportunity to learn from national leaders, connect with peers, and explore innovations in anesthesiology education and department operations. It brings together voices from the ACGME, ABA, and other organizations, creating a collaborative environment where we all gain new perspectives and practical insights.

Membership

Membership in AAPAE is connected to your department’s membership in SAAAPM. When your department submits its annual paperwork, you can be added as an AAPAE member at no additional cost. Your department’s designated key contact can also add members through the SAAAPM website.

How We Can Support You

As we look ahead, our goal is to strengthen the sense of belonging and psychological safety that makes this community so valuable. We want AAPAE to be a place where you feel encouraged to ask for help, offer your expertise, and engage authentically with colleagues who understand the realities of our work.

Please take some time to explore our website, browse available resources, participate in the Community Forum, and get to know the council members who are committed to supporting you.

I’m excited for the year ahead, and I look forward to growing, learning, and collaborating with all of you as we continue shaping the future of our association.

Warmly,
Erin Wood, MS, C-TAGME
President, AAPAE 2025-2027
