AAPAE

Welcome

Welcome to the Association of Anesthesiology Program Administrators and Educators (AAPAE). We hope this group serves to support all of you in your roles as administrators and educators of anesthesiology training programs.

A History of the AAPAE

Administrators and educators of anesthesiology training programs petitioned for a group of our own for several years and on April 24, 2015, the SAAAPM Council agreed to support the formation of the AAPAE for a three-year trial period. Our initial proposal for the formation of our association included a set of goals jointly established by SAAAPM Council and the new leadership of AAPAE. All of these goals were met before January of 2018. In April of 2018, the AAPAE was approved as a full-member association of the SAAAPM. We are deeply grateful to the SAAAPM Council for allowing us an opportunity to create such an organization and hope to continue to support both administrators and educators toward our goal of training the next generation of anesthesiologists. The manuscript chronicling the creation of our organization and the improvement in the groups Sense of Community two years after its formation is available in the Journal for Education in Perioperative Medicine: Vol. XXI, Issue 2.

AAPAE Past Leadership

The creation of this organization would not have been possible without the leadership of our founding President, Amy Miller Juve, EdD, MEd, Associate Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University. Her leadership developed a solid foundation for this organization to grow and we are indebted to her for her dedication to creating an organization that can support all of us in our own professional development.

What projects has AAPAE pursued for the benefit of its members?

Projects have included the following:

  1. Creation of a peer mentoring program for program administrators and educators. This program allows for members to support each other in their professional development. Please log into this website to view the Mentorship Program Page under the News & Resources Tab: http://www.saaapm.org/aapae/news-resources/mentorship-program
  2. Creation of a vibrant virtual community. Through our private Facebook group and our listserv, we are able to connect with our community outside of the annual meeting to ask questions, offer advice, or reach out to others who understand our work. To join the Facebook group, simply search for Association of Anesthesiology Program Administrators/Educators (AAPAE) on Facebook. All new members are automatically added to the listserv.
  3. Creation of informal poster session at the annual meeting. The informal poster session is an opportunity for AAPAE members to practice writing up their ideas and original work for a poster presentation. Each poster is presented to the group to help share ideas and give members additional opportunities to speak publicly.
  4. Planning of the annual meeting at SAAAPM. Our meetings serve as a place where we can obtain information from and interact with leaders from the ACGME and ABA, showcase and highlight innovations within our programs, and most importantly, where we can learn and grow as professionals in a supportive and collaborative environment.

How to become a member?

Membership to AAPAE is based on your department’s membership to SAAAPM. When your department submits paperwork for membership each year, your name can be added to the list as a member of the AAPAE at no additional cost. Members can be added to SAAAPM by a member of the organization at your department through the website. Log into the website, go to the Members tab and click on Manage Members.

How can we better serve you?

We strive to continually develop and build a sense of community. We want this community to be one in which we feel comfortable talking to and collaborating with peers.

Please take a few minutes to look at our website, visit our resources page and learn more about the council members who are eager to make this new organization successful. Come back often! Please let us know how we can make this site more useful to you.

We are looking forward to working together to shape the future of our organization.

Sincerely,

Lara Zisblatt, EdD, MA, PMME
President, AAPAE 2019-2021
